Health Hazard Evaluation Report: HETA-81-140-1318: General Tire and Rubber Company; Peru, Indiana

  An environmental survey and medical evaluation was conducted among 22 employees of the General Tire and Rubber Company (SIC-3540), Peru, Indiana, on February 12 and 13, 1981. The request for evaluation was made by a representative of Local Union 626 of the United Rubber Workers of America on behalf of workers exposed to metal working fluids. The fluids consisted of a naphthenic based oil, number 2 diesel fuel, and two chlorinated paraffin-based oils. Fifteen employees exposed to one or more of the fluids reported work related dermatoses and 13 had abnormal skin findings. Eight employees had chronic skin problems. All three employees who had constant exposure through immersion in the fluids had skin problems. Three of five employees with intermittent exposure reported skin problems. The authors conclude that a dermatological health hazard existed from both constant and intermittent immersion in the fluids. Recommendations include establishing a rigorous program of equipment maintenance, removal of metal particles from recirculated fluids, and improved skin hygiene.
