Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for formaldehyde (50000) at two factories of Woolrich Woolen Mills (SIC- 2321), Woolrich, Pennsylvania in August 1982. The request for evaluation was made out of concern due to a skin rash among employees who handled shirts made from formaldehyde resin finished cotton materials. Airborne formaldehyde concentrations averaged 0.3 to 0.5 parts per million (ppm) at the two facilities. The current OSHA standard is 3ppm for an 8-hour workday. A medical questionnaire was given to 120 employees. At one facility, all employees complained of burning eyes, 46 percent reported burning throat, 1.5 percent complained of chest tightness, and 58 percent had a skin rash. At the other factory, 89 percent reported burning eyes, 72 percent had burning throat, 37 percent complained of chest tightness, and 44 percent had a skin rash. The authors conclude that although the formaldehyde concentration was less than 0.5ppm, reported symptoms were due to the combined effects of formaldehyde vapor exposure and contact with formaldehyde containing materials. Recommendations include moving employees having formaldehyde allergic sensitization to jobs having no formaldehyde contact, continued close monitoring, and protective clothing for exposed employees.
