Description:Air samples for formaldehyde (50000) were collected and medical interviews were conducted at Mitchell Plastics, Incorporated (SIC- 3070), in Cheswick, Pennsylvania on November 8 through 10, 1982. The evaluation was requested by a representative of Local 46 of the International Molders and Allied Workers Union on behalf of 16 employees who were experiencing headaches, sore throats, and skin rashes. Formaldehyde concentrations were well within OSHA standards of 3 parts per million. The authors conclude that injection molding of the Celcon resin presented no acute health hazard to mold press operators
formaldehyde concentrations were not sufficiently high enough to cause substantial irritant effects. However, the cause of eye irritation reported by press operators remains unexplained. Material handlers should wear gloves when working with fibrous glass or other irritants, and formaldehyde exposures should be kept as low as possible.
