Description:

Environmental breathing zone and room air samples were collected at Plan de Salud del Valle, Incorporated (SIC-8081), in Fort Lupton, Colorado, on February 2, 1983. The worker operating the printing room was concerned about the health effects of strong odors generated by organic solvents used at that location. Samples were analyzed for xylene (1330207), toluene (108883), and petroleum- naphtha (8030306) in the printing room. Air samples for toluene and xylene were below the laboratory limit of detection of 0.01 milligrams (mg). The average concentration for petroleum-naphtha was 75mg per cubic meter. There is no evaluation criteria for petroleum-naphtha. The author concludes that a potential health hazard exists from exposures to petroleum-naphtha, the least of which could include irritation of eyes and upper respiratory system. There is a fire hazard due to the close proximity of the printing room to the boiler room. He recommends that the printing operation be moved away from the boiler room, and local exhaust ventilation (such as a small canopy hood) be installed to eliminate worker exposure.
