Description:A hazard evaluation and medical survey was made at the Detroit Gasket Company (SIC-2396) in Frement, Ohio during October and December 1982. The request was made by the United Air Workers International Union on behalf of the female workers who claimed that only five perfectly healthy children had been born to employees in the preceding 3 years. A medical questionnaire was administered to all female employees. No environmental measurements were made as occupational exposure was considered minimal. The incidence of adverse reproductive outcomes of pregnancies that occurred while employed at Detroit Gasket were compared to the incidence occurring when the employee did not work at the company and also to the general population. The frequency of birth defects, spontaneous and induced abortions, and stillbirths was statistically similar in the exposed and nonexposed groups. The occurrence of health problems other than those of a reproductive nature was 33 percent higher in the exposed group than in the nonexposed group. Eye and throat irritations were the most frequent problems. The authors conclude there is no evidence of adverse reproductive outcomes attributable to occupational chemical exposure. Improved ventilation and use of protective clothing are recommended.
