  Area samples were collected for asphalt fumes and fractions at a roofing project at the University Medical Center (SIC-1761) in Morgantown, West Virginia on May 18, 1982. Some employees had complained of odors and were concerned about possible health effects that might result from inhalation of vapors from the roofing compounds. None of the area samples exceeded OSHA standards of 5 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) for asphalt fumes. In the sample fractions, only one had any measurable aromatic hydrocarbons, which consisted of 0.00023mg/m3 fluoranthene (206440), 0.00134mg/m3 pyrene (129000), and 0.00053mg/m3 chrysene (218019). There are no specific recommended standards for aromatic hydrocarbons. On the basis of the sample analysis, NIOSH concluded that a significant asphalt fume hazard did not exist for the employees of the medical center
  
  however, headaches, coughing, and hoarseness reported by employees are consistent with exposure to asphalt fumes. The author recommends that a specific area be designated for the placement of the asphalt cauldron to minimize contamination of the fresh air ventilation intake by asphalt fumes.
