Description:A health hazard evaluation was conducted to assess causes of symptoms reported by employees of the Cincinnati Technical College (SIC-8222) Learning Resource Center, in Cincinnati, Ohio, on July 14 and 15, 1982. The survey was requested by an unidentified individual on behalf of 13 employees in the Center. Complaints included lethargy, headache, sinus congestion, persistent colds, eye irritation, dizziness, faintness, nausea, nose bleeds, and skin rash. Air sampling, ventilation measurements, and temperature and humidity measurements were taken. Employees were interviewed. All environmental air concentrations measured were below OSHA and NIOSH standards for air contaminants. The authors recommend prohibition of parking or idling of motor vehicles near the Center air intakes, elevation of the fresh air intake vents to prevent motor vehicle exhausts from entering the building, maintenance of relative humidity between 20 and 60 percent, maintenance of makeup air at a flow rate of 5 or 20 cubic feet per minute for nonsmoking and smoking areas, respectively, and the provision of a health care unit with appropriate first aid supplies and trained personnel.
