Description:A health hazard evaluation was conducted at East Jackson Middle School (SIC-8211), Jackson, Michigan in August and September 1982. Two state agencies and the local Teachers Association requested the survey after complaints of headache, fatigue, mucous membrane irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, and skin irritation were reported by school staff members. Environmental and medical surveys were conducted. Detector tube and long term air samples were collected during the initial environmental survey. Detailed medical questionnaires were administered to 43 of 44 current and former school staff members. Direct reading detector tube samples were collected during a follow up environmental survey. No evidence was found of any chemical contamination in the school. Analysis of medical questionnaires did not reveal any time/place clusters of related illnesses attributed to any chemical contaminants in the school environment. The investigators conclude that a health hazard from exposures to chemical contaminants in the school could not be documented. Modifications to the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning system may reduce the complaints of irritant symptoms.
