Description:

Worker exposures to asbestos (1332214) were surveyed on April 21, 1983 at Goodyear Aerospace Corporation in Akron, Ohio. The evaluation was requested by the United Auto Workers of America, Local 856, on behalf of an unspecified number of employees. Personal and area air samples were collected along with bulk samples of the ceiling and wall insulation to determine concentration of asbestos. The bulk insulation samples contained 60 to 85 percent amosite asbestos, greater than 1 percent chrysotile asbestos, and 3 to 5 percent glass wool. Air samples contained up to 0.04 asbestos fibers per cubic centimeter, 8 hour time weighted average, well below the OSHA standard of 2 fibers per cubic centimeter for an 8 hour time weighted average. The coating over the asbestos insulation was in poor condition and accessible to contact damage. The author concludes that a potential health hazard from asbestos exposure does exist at this facility. He recommends that the asbestos insulation be removed due to its deterioration and friable nature. Removal of the asbestos should be carried out in accordance with OSHA and Environmental Protection Agency regulations.
