Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for carbon- monoxide (630080), carbon-dioxide (124389), formaldehyde (50000), nitrogen-dioxide (10102440), ozone (10028156), and hydrocarbon vapors in the Sheriff's Department (SIC-9221) of the Boone County Administrative Offices in Burlington, Kentucky on November 3, 1982. The request for an evaluation was made by a representative of the Boone County government on suspicion of toxic gases or vapors being present in the sheriff's offices. Breathing zone samples showed that toxic concentrations of gases or vapors were not present. Medical interviews were conducted with 11 employees who worked in the department. They reported headaches, dizziness, nausea, eye irritation, sore throats, and allergy symptoms. A follow-up survey and ventilation measurements were made on November 18, 1982. The air handling system was not providing sufficient, fresh, outside air. The current American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers standard for air flow in office environments where smoking is allowed is 20 cubic feet per minute per person. The authors conclude that the employees' symptoms were the result of poor ventilation. Improved ventilation is recommended.
