Description:Environmental samples were analyzed for 1,1,1-trichloroethane (71556) (TCE) and isopropanol (67630), two degreasing solvents used at Xomox Corporation (SIC-3494) Cincinnati, Ohio in April 1983. The survey was requested by a company representative on behalf of 35 employees because of concern over exposure to TCE and isopropanol. Breathing zone air samples were taken above the degreasing tanks. Work practices were observed. Private interviews were conducted. TCE concentrations of breathing zone samples ranged from 31 to 129 parts per million (ppm) and 9.3 to 47ppm in the actuator assembly and valve assembly departments, respectively. Isopropanol concentrations ranged from 0.9 to 4.7ppm in the valve assembly department and from 0.9 to 1.9ppm in the actuator assembly department. No exposures exceeded current OSHA standards. Observations of work practices revealed potential for frequent skin contact with the two compounds. Employees not using protective gloves were apt to suffer cracked and inflamed skin. Dizziness, drowsiness, and headache were commonly reported symptoms. The author concludes that there is no hazard from exposure to TCE or isopropanol vapors, but worker practices allow for frequent skin contact. It is recommended that all containers of degreasing solvents be kept covered and that workers wear protective gloves.
