Description:Environmental samples were analyzed for formaldehyde (50000) at National Jewish Hospital (SIC-8221), Denver, Colorado, in December 1982 and January 1983. The survey was requested by a representative of the hospital on behalf of animal research workers because of concerns about exposures to formaldehyde vapors. Personal and general area air samples were taken and analyzed. Employees were interviewed and medical questionnaires were completed. Concentrations of formaldehyde ranged from 0.18 to 1.45 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3). The highest sample exceeded the NIOSH standard of 1.2mg/m3. An inadequate ventilation system was discovered in the area of highest concentration. Symptoms reported on the questionnaires were: eye, nose, and throat irritations
coughing
lung irritation
and chest tightness. The author concludes that on the basis of the allergenic and carcinogenic properties of formaldehyde, a health hazard exists in the animal research laboratory. It is recommended that local exhaust ventilation be installed, and worker contact with formaldehyde be minimized. The hazards for formaldehyde exposure should be known to all workers.
