Description:

An evaluation of a cluster of cases of reported skin cancer was performed at the Markland Lock and Dam facility (SIC-4441) Markland, Kentucky in March 1982. The survey was requested by the US Army Corps of Engineers because 7 of 16 employees were reported to have skin cancer. A medical questionnaire was given to 15 employees to obtain work, medical, and dermatological histories. A limited clinical examination of exposed areas of the skin was done. Histological records of workers with dermatological problems were traced. An inventory list of chemicals used at the facility was obtained and checked for substances known to cause skin cancer. No compounds linked to skin cancer were used more than once a year. Clinical examinations revealed the following dermatological conditions: benign mole, one case; actinic keratosis, two cases; basal cell carcinoma, one case. The author concludes that the skin conditions presented are the results of chronic sun exposure inherent with the job. The use of protective clothing and sunscreen ointments to reduce solar exposure is recommended.
