Description:Environmental samples were analyzed for ammonia (7664417), chlorine (7782505), polynuclear aromatics, sulfur-dioxide (7446095), total particulates, and xylene (1330207) at Scott Paper Company (SIC- 2611), Everett, Washington in February 1983. The survey was requested by the Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers, Local 183 because of persistent respiratory problems reported by a boiler house worker. Breathing zone air samples were collected and analyzed for sulfur-dioxide, total particulates, polynuclear aromatics, and xylene. General area samples were collected for chlorine and ammonia analysis. Medical interviews were conducted. All workers reported occasional periods of shortness of breath and headache
six complained of eye, nose, and throat irritation associated with burning automobile tires. Similar symptoms were associated with the combustion products of the hog fuel pile. Number 10 boiler room sulfur-dioxide concentrations exceeded the NIOSH standard of 0.5 parts per million. All exposures to total particulates, polynuclear aromatic compounds, and chlorine were below NIOSH standards. Ammonia and xylene were not detected. The authors conclude that the severe symptoms of the boiler house worker were not work related. It is recommended that supply air to Number 10 boiler room be filtered to remove sulfur-dioxide. Respirators should be worn in boiler room.
