Description:Respiratory problems from ink oil mist in the printing department of Nabisco Brands, Incorporated, Beacon, New York were investigated in May 1980, February 1981, and August 1982. The confidential request was made on behalf of 17 employees over a 3-to-4-hour period at a collection rate of 2 liters per minute. Filters were treated with chloroform to extract oil collected and analyzed by fluorescence spectrophotometry. General medical conditions with respect to respiratory or dermatological problems were ascertained. Exposure to the pressmen to oil mist concentrations ranged from 0.8 to 3.5 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3). All of the personal samples were lower than the OSHA permissible exposure limit of 5mg/m3. Interviews with 9 of 17 printing department employees did not suggest any significant respiratory problems. Some skin problems were reported but were considered consistent with an occupational origin such as defatting of skin from solvents and contact dermatitis. The authors conclude that no health hazard from exposure to oil mist was observed at the time of the survey. They recommend that the employer investigate the permeability of its protective gloves to solvents to determine if a more effective barrier is available to minimize dermatitis.
