  Insulation material was analyzed for its asbestos (1332214) content at the West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey (SIC-9611) Morgantown, West Virginia in January 1983. The survey was requested by an employee because of a possible hazard from exposure to asbestos fibers. Bulk samples of the material were collected and analyzed with polarized light microscopy. Six air samples were taken, and fiber counts were made. Bulk samples of insulation from the water heating system contained asbestos. Insulation around ducts to the air handler also contained asbestos. The spackled lobby ceiling was composed of asbestos as well. One of the air samples contained 0.14 fibers per cubic centimeter. This sample was from the boiler room and exceeded the NIOSH standard of 0.10 fiber per cubic centimeter. The author concludes that a potential health hazard exists. It is recommended that the ceiling in the lobby entrance be removed in accordance with OSHA and Environmental Protection Agency regulations. The insulation covering the hot water pipes can remain provided it is kept in good condition and the pipes are not exposed.
