Description:Environmental samples were analyzed for lead (7439921) at General Magnetics Incorporated (SIC-3662), Bloomfield, New Jersey, between September 1982 and January 1983. A request for the survey was made by management on behalf of ten employees after an OSHA citation was received because of potentially hazardous concentrations of lead. Air samples were taken and analyzed for lead. Ventilation systems were evaluated. Blood samples were taken from eight employees. Blood was analyzed for lead, erythroprotoporphyrin, and hematocrit. Lead concentrations in air samples ranged from 1 to 3.5 micrograms per cubic meter (microg/m3). This is below the OSHA standard of 50microg/m3 for an 8-hour workday. Ventilation systems were adequate enough to keep lead concentrations below standards. Blood lead values ranged from 4 to 14microg per 100 milliliters, well within those values found in the general public. Erythroprotoporphyrin and hematocrit results were also within the ranges of the general population. The authors conclude that there is no risk of overexposure to lead. Improved ventilation is recommended, along with an education program concerning the health hazards of lead exposure.
