Description:Environmental samples were analyzed for hazardous chemicals at the former site of Triangle Chemical Company (SIC-9511, SIC-4783) Bridge City, Texas in August 1982. The survey was requested by EPA on behalf of employees to evaluate occupational hazards during a removal action. Wipe samples were taken from boots and gloves that had gone through decontamination. Area and personal air samples were taken and analyzed. Wipe samples were free of contaminants. All measured exposures were well below NIOSH standards. Volatile organic vapors were found in almost every sample. Toluene (108883) concentrations ranged from 20 to 3578 micrograms per cubic meter (microg/m3). Xylene (1330207) was found in 50 percent of the samples and had a mean concentration of 215microg/m3. Total hydrocarbons were found in 19 of 24 samples at a mean concentration of 60microg/m3. There were no detectable amounts of nitrosamines or ethylene-glycol. Acid anions were found in several samples. The author concludes that cleanup procedures being used were effective in protecting workers from harmful chemical exposures, however, potential hazards exist due to accidental spills and rupturing of chemical containers. Newly developed air sampling methods are recommended for hazardous waste site monitoring.
