Description:Personal breathing zone samples were analyzed for formaldehyde (50000) in the surgical biopsy hood at the Appalachian Laboratory for Occupational Safety and Health (SIC-9431), Morgantown, West Virginia from June to December 1982. The evaluation was requested by Local 3430 of the American Federation of Government Employees on behalf of the histology technicians who used the hood. Samples taken on June 4, 1982, showed average formaldehyde concentrations of 3.6 to 6.7 parts per million (ppm) with a peak concentration of 11ppm. The OSHA standard is 3ppm time weighted average with a maximum of 5ppm for any 30-minute period. Ventilation tests were also conducted in the hood. Modifications were made to the hood in July 1982. After modifications, ventilation tests showed an air flow of 100 feet per minute, and this was effective in capturing contaminants within the hood. Breathing zone analyses later showed no detectable concentration of formaldehyde. The author concludes that the modified hood controls formaldehyde exposure to within the NIOSH limit of 1.0ppm.
