  Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for organophosphates at the Hopkins Agricultural Chemical Company (SIC- 2879). Atlanta, Illinois in January, November, and December 1982. The survey was requested by a company representative to assess employee exposure during formulation and packaging of Counter (13071799) (terbufos). Breathing zone samples taken during production showed organophosphate concentrations of 0.017 to 0.133 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3). Concentrations were 0.116, and stackers, respectively. Analysis of wipe samples showed no contamination in the lunchroom or locker room. There is no current federal standard for exposure to terbufos. Confidential medical questionnaires were given to the formulator and packing employees and company records of the red blood cell cholinesterase concentrations were reviewed. One employee's cholinesterase concentration had fallen below 70 percent of baseline, and two employees reported work related health problems. The authors conclude that a potential health hazard exists. They recommended that ventilation of the packaging line be improved and contamination in the formulation control room be reduced.
