Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for chromic- acid (7738945) and zinc (7440666) at the Modine Manufacturing Company (SIC-3479), McHenry, Illinois in March and May 1982. The request for an evaluation was made by an employee representative on suspicion of illness associated with the chrome dipping operation. Breathing zone samples showed 0.7 micrograms per cubic meter chromic- acid as hexavalent-chromium (18540299) (Cr-VI). The current NIOSH standard for Cr-VI is 1 microgram per cubic meter. Zinc chromates were not found in the air samples. Spot tests showed Cr-VI contamination throughout the dipping and buffing operations. Confidential medical questionnaires were given to seven employees working in the dipping operation. One case of dermatitis and numerous complaints of mucous membrane irritation, nausea, and lightheadedness were reported. The authors conclude that a health hazard did not exist due to airborne Cr-VI compounds or zinc chromates. A potential hazard did exist due to poor handling of the dip solution. Good personal hygiene and improved work practices are recommended.
