Health Hazard Evaluation Report: HETA-82-236-1316: The Times-Mail; Bedford, Indiana

  Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for acetic- acid (64197) and particulates at the Bedford Times Mail (SIC-2711), Bedford, Indiana, on June 29, 1982. The request for evaluation was made by the newspaper management on behalf of the employees who were concerned about possible exposure to hazardous chemicals used in the stabilization process in the composing room after it was found that the lenses of several pairs of tinted plastic eyeglasses had become discolored. A medical questionnaire was administered to the ten employees who worked in the composing room. Airborne concentrations of acetic acid ranged from 0.74 to 5.2 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3). Airborne concentrations of total particulates ranged from acetic-acid and 10mg/m3 for total particulates. Air velocity measurements taken at or near the canopy hood showed the hood to be ineffective. The questionnaire data revealed no occupational health problems. No definite answer was found for what caused the discoloration of the lenses. The author concludes that a health hazard did not exist for employees in the composing room. He recommends modifying or adjusting the hood to improve its performance.
