Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for formaldehyde (50000) at three facilities of the North Central Dialysis Center (SIC-8081), Chicago, Illinois in May and June of 1982. A representative of the center requested the evaluation because of employee concerns about formaldehyde exposure during the cleaning and disinfection of artificial kidney units. Breathing zone samples were analyzed by gas chromatography. Formaldehyde concentrations of 0.50 and 0.57 parts per million (ppm) were found at two of the facilities; the formaldehyde concentration was below the detection limit at the third facility. The current OSHA standard for formaldehyde exposure is 3.0ppm. After equipment modifications and work procedure changes were instituted, a follow- up survey was conducted in December 1982. Only one sample had a formaldehyde concentration (0.84ppm) above the detection limit. The author concludes that although formaldehyde concentrations have been reduced, there is still a potential health hazard. He recommends improved ventilation of the working areas, covering of the units, and wearing of protective clothing.
