Description:Environmental samples were analyzed for mercury (7439976) at the Robert Goetz Dental Clinic (SIC-8021), Cincinnati, Ohio, in December 1982 and January 1983. The survey was requested on behalf of three employees to evaluate exposure. A mercury sample was used to screen the clinic for mercury contamination. Personal breathing zone air samples were taken and analyzed for mercury vapors. Urine samples were collected from the dentist and dental assistant and analyzed for mercury. A hair sample was also collected and analyzed for mercury. Highest mercury exposures occurred during preparation of dental amalgam. A maximum concentration of 0.07 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) was measured, approaching the OSHA standard of and 9.6 micrograms per liter for the dentist and dental assistant, respectively. These values were within the range of those not occupationally exposed. The hair sample contained 8.7 parts per million mercury. This measure was not significant since it did not correlate well with exposure to elemental mercury. The author concludes that there is no mercury exposure hazard. Proper storage and handling of mercury is recommended.
