Description:An investigation of adverse health effects was conducted at the North Clackamas School District No. 12 (SIC-2791), in Milwaukie, Oregon, on January 13 and February 15 and 16, 1983. The survey was requested by the three workers in the photo typesetting room who experienced headaches, fatigue, and mood changes. Employees were interviewed by a NIOSH physician and environmental air samples were collected to determine exposures to the photo typesetting chemicals. Temperature, relative humidity, and carbon-dioxide (124389) concentrations were monitored. Concentrations of acetic-acid (64197), ammonia (7664417), carbon-dioxide, stoddard-solvent (8052413), and 1,1,1-trichloroethane (71556) were well within all recommended evaluation criteria. The authors conclude that adverse health effects experienced by the workers could be the result of a lack of air flow, low concentrations of acetic-acid vapors, glare on video display terminal screen, and the nonadjustable viewing angle of the screen. They recommend mechanical ventilation of the room for an air flow of 5 cubic feet per minute, installation of a local exhaust ventilation system exhausted to the outside, spraying and drying of materials under the hood, covering waste baskets, installation of a glare screen on the video display terminal, and adjustable chairs for terminal operators.
