  A medical survey of 113 employees of the Cumberland Manufacturing Company (SIC-2330) at Princeton, Kentucky was conducted on October 19 and 20, 1982. The survey was requested by the Kentucky Department of Labor on suspicion of an outbreak of illness among the employees being caused by exposure to an unidentified toxic gas. Prior environmental studies by the Fire Marshal and the state Department of Labor had detected no carbon-monoxide (630080), freon, or explosive gases. Eighty-nine of the garment assembly room employees reported one or more of these symptoms: headaches, lightheadedness, sore or dry throat, burning eyes, weakness, sleepiness, nausea, dizziness, and difficulty in breathing. Medical records were reviewed for 36 of the 48 employees who had received emergency medical care. Arterial blood gas data on three workers was also reviewed. The author concludes that the pattern of health effects neither confirms nor denies exposure to a hazardous substance. She suggests that hyperventilation was responsible for many of the symptoms.
