Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for carbon- monoxide (630080) (CO) at the baggage transfer point of Frontier Airlines (SIC-4511), Stapleton International Airport, Denver, Colorado in March, 1983. The request for the evaluation was made by the management of the airline out of concern for a possible health hazard to baggage handlers from CO due to gasoline powered tractors delivering baggage to the transfer point. Measurements made at the site and approximately 50 yards away showed an average background CO concentration of 10 parts per million (ppm). When the tractors arrived, the CO concentration increased to 100ppm but declined to 15 to 20ppm within 15 seconds. During working hours, the time weighted average concentration of CO ranged from 29 to 35ppm. The OSHA standard for CO is 50ppm. It was noted that some tractor engines were turned off when they arrived at the baggage transfer point, while other engines were left running. Medical surveys were conducted in which individual exposures to CO were monitored by measuring the carboxyhemoglobin content. The maximum observed carboxyhemoglobin concentration was 3.8 percent. The authors conclude a potential health hazard does exist. They recommend that tractor engines be turned off while delivering baggage.
