Description:A mortality study was conducted at the Aluminum Company of America's Warrick Operations (SIC-3353) Newburgh, Indiana from September 1981 to February 1983. A confidential request was made for the survey on behalf of the workers in buildings 260 and 254 because of possible cause specific mortality due to exposure to coal-tar-pitch (61789604). A proportionate mortality study was performed on 101 company deaths to determine if an excess of deaths occurred from leukemia and cancers of the digestive system. Proportionate mortality ratios were computed for major causes of death. Ratios for cancer of the rectum, all cancers of the liver, and cancer of other lymphatic tissue were all elevated significantly. To remove artifactual errors, a proportionate cancer mortality ratio was computed. Only cancer of the liver was in excess
2 cases were found, with 0.29 expected. The proportionate cancer mortality ratio was calculated for leukemia and other neoplasms of lymphatic and hematopoietic tissues as a group and results were statistically insignificant. The authors conclude that there is no occupational cancer excess. It is recommended that employee deaths be monitored with particular attention given to cancers of the liver, lymphatic and hematopoietic tissues, and the respiratory system.
