Description:Environmental samples were analyzed for diethylaminoethanol (100378) (DEAE) at the Johnson Museum, (SIC-8411) Cornell University, Ithaca, New York in January 1983. The survey was requested by the 40 employees because of eye irritation and dermatitis. DEAE was used to humidify the air in the museum. Air samples and bulk samples were analyzed for DEAE. Medical interviews were conducted. Of the 14 samples taken, only 2 had detectable amounts of DEAE. The two concentrations were 0.05 and 0.04 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3). This was below the OSHA standard of 50mg/m3. The two bulk samples contained about 30mg per square meter of exposed area. A total of 46 percent of the employees complained of eye irritation, 37 percent complained of skin irritation, and 17 percent complained of headache, nose and throat irritation, or dizziness. Six females reported gynecological problems. The authors conclude that contact with surfaces coated with condensed DEAE may be responsible for some of the irritant effects. Headache and dizziness may be related to the closed building syndrome. It is recommended that DEAE be wiped from surfaces, or the use of DEAE be discontinued.
