Description:Worker exposures to carbon-monoxide (630080) (CO), ozone (10028156) (O3), and nitrogen-dioxide (10102440) (NO2) were investigated on December 13, 1973 at Fisher Body Division (SIC-3711), General Motors Corporation, Hamilton factory, in Hamilton, Ohio. The evaluation was requested by a representative of the employees on behalf of 93 workers involved in metal inert gas welding operations at the number 1 and 2 door lines. Detector tube samples were collected around the welding operations, canopy hood ventilation efficiency was evaluated, and 11 workers were questioned about health symptoms. Concentrations of CO ranged between 10 and 15 parts per million (ppm), compared to the OSHA standard of 50ppm. Concentrations of O3 and NO2 were below detection limits of 0.05 and 0.5ppm, respectively, compared to corresponding OSHA standards of 0.1 and 5ppm. The canopy hood ventilation system provided adequate air flow. Two employees reported mild irritation of the nose and throat. The authors conclude that no hazards exist from exposures to CO, O3, and NO2.
