Description:A health hazard survey was conducted by NIOSH at an allergy clinic (SIC-8011) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to evaluate complaints of exposure to natural gas and its reactive byproducts. Tests for concentrations of the mercaptans and dimethyl-sulfoxide (67685) were made using deactivated charcoal. Through interviews, symptoms were studied. Laboratory blood and urine analyses were performed for all employees. The source of natural gas for heating and ventilation was checked and gas composition verified. An alleged natural gas leak could not be found. Mercaptans and dimethyl-sulfoxide were not detectable at the lower limits of sensitivity using analytical methods adequate to detect concentrations well below toxic values. A diverse number of symptoms were reported
no pattern relating to natural gas exposure was identified. Blood and urine findings were within normal limits, with some individual exceptions not believed linked to natural gas exposure. The authors conclude that there was no health hazard from the mercaptans or dimethyl-sulfoxide. Hazard from any other component of natural gas may be ruled out because the mercaptan concentration, which was not detectable, always exceeds the values for other hazardous substances in natural gas.
