Description:A walk-through inspection was conducted at the Hubert Humphrey Building (SIC-9431) in Washington, DC, on March 16, 1982. The inspection was requested by the Assistant Director of the Centers for Disease Control because of a persistent flu like illness experienced by service employees in the building. A questionnaire was distributed, and air samples were obtained for bacteria, fungi, and other contaminants. Nasal swabs and sera were drawn from affected subjects. Affected persons experienced ongoing respiratory exposure to an unidentified antigen associated with water leaks in one corridor of the building. Affected subjects had lower single breath carbon-monoxide diffusing capacity than those who were not affected, indicating the presence of lung disease. The authors conclude that headaches, myalgias, chills, chest tightness, fever, and nausea experienced by building personnel were probably caused by respiratory exposure to an unknown antigen. They recommend that the carpeting and ceiling panels be discarded, the pipe exteriors cleaned, the floors scrubbed with bleach, and walls and furniture vacuumed with a high efficiency particulate air filter.
