Description:Worker exposures to carbon-monoxide (630080) (CO) were surveyed on February 24, 1983, at American Enterprise Institute (SIC-7392) in Washington, DC. The evaluation was requested by the employees on behalf of 20 workers concerned about CO fumes from an enclosed parking garage located beneath their offices. Short- and long-term air samples were collected in and around the offices and the garage for CO, formaldehyde (50000), ozone (10028156), sulfur-dioxide (7446095), and nitrogen oxides. Inside the offices, CO concentrations were below 5 parts per million (ppm) most of the day but increased to a maximum of 10ppm in the early to middle afternoon. CO concentrations at the street corner and inside the garage peaked at 15 and 30ppm, respectively, by the later afternoon hours. Concentrations of the other four contaminants were below the limit of detection. The workers complained of eye irritation, headache, fatigue, sinus congestion, and increased frequency of colds, and several said that their symptoms were worse at the end of the day or week. The author concludes that no hazard exists from CO or other contaminants at this office and suggests that the building managers check to make sure that adequate quantities of air are being supplied and circulated in the offices, and that no smoking offices be available for workers upon request.
