Description:Exposures to a variety of laboratory chemicals were surveyed on February 3 and April 12 to 16, 1982 and June 22 to 24 and July 14, 1983 at the University of Cincinnati Semiconductor Laboratory (SIC- 8221) in Cincinnati, Ohio. The evaluation was requested by an unspecified individual on behalf of the facility and students using the laboratory. Personal and area air samples were collected during the various laboratory operations, and work processes and general conditions were evaluated. Exposures were undetectable or well below recommended limits for all laboratory chemicals. In many areas, ventilation was inadequate, and in several cases there were negative air flow patterns. The internal walls of deteriorating fume hoods contained 20 to 25 percent chrysotile (12001295) asbestos. The author concludes that no immediate health hazards exist in the laboratory but the lack of adequate ventilation presents the potential for a significant hazard. Recommendations are made for improvements and modifications to the ventilation systems, better housekeeping procedures, posting of toxic hazard signs, substitution of some chemicals, and evaluation of the asbestos problem associated with the fume hood interior walls.
