Description:Worker exposures during rubber manufacturing operations (SIC-0306) were surveyed on February 11 and 12 and December 9 and 10, 1981 at a company in Middlefield, Ohio. The evaluation was requested by an authorized representative of the Amalgomated Clothing and Textile Workers Union on behalf of 270 production workers. Personal and area air samples were collected for various work process chemicals, and 106 workers completed medical symptom questionnaires. None of the chemical concentrations exceeded OSHA limits, but exposures to carbon-disulfide (75150), carbon-black (1333864), and nitrosamines exceeded the NIOSH recommended limits of 3, 3.5, and 0.1 milligrams per cubic meter, respectively. Workers in the extruded finishing area reported symptoms such as shortness of breath upon exertion, tension, fatigue, difficulty concentrating and irritant complaints. No significant incidence of reproductive disorders was identified. The authors conclude that potential exposure hazards exist for carbon-disulfide, carbon-black, and nitrosamines. They recommend improvements in work practices, work operations, and work area ventilation. Medical evaluations for neurological and cardiovascular disorders should be provided periodically for workers exposed to carbon-disulfide.
