Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for cutting oil mists, metal working fluids, and mineral spirits at Raytheon Missile Systems Divisions (SIC-3761), Bristol, Tennessee in July 1985. The evaluation was requested confidentially to investigate the occurrence of skin rashes in machine department employees. Ninety-four machine department employees and 26 comparisons from the shipping and receiving departments were given skin examinations and administered questionnaires. Bulk samples of used and unused oils were analyzed. Airborne oil mists and mineral spirits vapor were either not detected or below their relevant standards. Traces of arsenic (7440382) and zinc (7440666) were detected in bulk samples of used or unused cutting oil. Chlorocresol (59507) was found in a concentrate of Trim/Sol machine coolant. The prevalence of skin rash among employees exposed to cutting fluids was 36 percent, versus 12 percent in the comparisons. The skin rashes were primarily simple irritant dermatitis. The authors conclude that a health hazard exists resulting from combined effects of direct skin contact with cutting oils and fluids, solvents, and metal shavings. Recommendations include informing employees of possible skin problems associated with cutting fluids, reducing skin contact with cutting fluids, and wearing protective aprons and gloves.
