Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) at Holley Electric Corporation (SIC- 7694), Jesup, Georgia, in June 1983. The evaluation was requested by the Georgia Department of Human Resources out of concern for employee PCB exposure. Blood samples previously collected from 12 current employees were analyzed. PCB vapor concentrations in the operating areas of the facility ranged from 1 to 4 micrograms per cubic meter (microg/m3). PCB concentrations of 25 to 74microg/m3 were found near storage drums and old electrical transformers in two warehouses. The OSHA standard for PCBs is 1000microg/m3. PCB concentrations in wipe samples ranged from 0.1 to 30microg per 100 square centimeters. Blood PCB concentrations of the 12 workers ranged from 5 to 128 parts per billion (ppb), with an average of 25ppb. Only one sample exceeded 30ppb, considered to be a normal value. Five workers had blood PCB concentrations of 5 to 6ppb, and three workers with primary PCB contact had blood PCB concentrations greater than 25ppb. The authors conclude that a potential health hazard due to PCBs exists at the facility. Thorough decontamination of the warehouse is recommended.
