Description:A health hazard survey of an office building (SIC-8011, 8021, 6611) at Alhambra Plaza, Clifton, New Jersey was conducted in July 1982. The evaluation was requested by the owners of the plaza due to complaints from building occupants of nausea, headache, and irritated mucosal membranes. The ventilation system was inspected, and interviews were conducted with most of the occupants. Medical questionnaires were given to 62 of the occupants. Of these, 53 were returned. Approximately 33 percent of the respondents complained of headache, eye irritation, or sore throat. Almost half of the respondents felt there was a problem with the air in the building. The ventilation system in three of the corner buildings removed a low volume of exhaust air with no provision for supplying fresh outside air. The ventilation system did not meet the guidelines of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). ASHRAE guidelines recommend that 20 cubic feet per minute of outside air be supplied for each office occupant. The authors conclude that there is a health hazard for employees in the building. Recommendations include modifying the ventilation system to supply 20 cubic feet per minute of air flow per occupant and restricting smoking to areas with adequate air flow.
