Description:Area and breathing zone samples were analyzed for dimethylethanolamine (108011 - Offices & clinics of medical doctors - (SIC 1987)) (DMEA) at the Coca Cola Company (SIC- 2086), Hightstown, New Jersey, in March 1983. The evaluation request was made by the Teamsters Union to determine if a respiratory hazard existed due to a water-based epoxy spray used to line the inside of beverage cans. The epoxy spray contained DMEA, which causes asthma. Previously obtained data on butanol (71363) and butyl cellosolve (111762) were reviewed. Fourteen employees who worked in the spray liner area were interviewed and given pulmonary function tests. Immunochemistry studies were performed. DMEA was detected in only one area sample at a concentration of 1.08 parts per million. Butanol and butyl cellosolve concentrations were below OSHA standards. Thirteen of 14 exposed workers reported symptoms of respiratory irritation. Five had abnormal baseline pulmonary function. Three workers had significant antibody concentrations. The authors conclude that there is a health hazard from exposure to a water-based epoxy spray containing DMEA at the facility. DMEA may cause lung sensitization. Recommendations include enclosing the spray nozzle more completely, use of respirators when in contact with the spray liners, and medical monitoring of can assembly workers.
