Description:Environmental samples were analyzed for fiber glass at the corporate headquarters of King Kwik Minit Markets, Incorporated (SIC-5411, 7374) Cincinnati, Ohio, in September and October 1983. The evaluation was requested by the company management due to reports of itching and localized rashes occurring among data processing computer room employees. Medical questionnaires were administered to eight employees and skin lesions were examined. Tape was applied to skin lesions or normal exposed skin of workers in an attempt to pick up fibers adhering to the skin. No glass fibers were found in any air samples. Glass fibers were found on three tape samples taken from exposed skin and on one sample from a computer printout. The medical questionnaires and examinations revealed itching and small red maculopapular skin lesions. Symptoms of rash and itching first started in May 1983 when air conditioning equipment in another part of the building was replaced. The symptoms disappeared at home and on weekends. The authors conclude that the outbreak is consistent with fibrous glass dermatitis. There is no current health hazard resulting from exposure to fiber glass. The symptoms are not caused by environmental conditions in the computer room. A thorough cleaning of the computer room is recommended.
