Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for methyl- ethyl-ketone (78933), methyl-isobutyl-ketone (108101), trichloroethylene (79016), and glycol ethers at Basic Tool and Supply Company (SIC-3479), Oakland, California in February and March 1984. The survey was requested by a local union on behalf of the employees. One employee working in the degreasing room was reportedly overcome by solvent vapors and fainted. Sound level measurements were also made. Questionnaires were administered. Liver function studies of 12 employees working in the degreasing and silk screening rooms were conducted. Skin examinations were performed. Excessive air concentrations were measured only for trichloroethylene, the concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 426 parts per million (ppm). The OSHA standard for trichloroethylene is 25ppm. Noise levels ranged from 86 to 91 A-weighted decibels (dBA). The OSHA standard is 90dBA. Symptoms reported by the employee’s included sleepiness, dizziness, headache, and nausea. Nine employees had irritant dermatitis. All liver function results were within normal limits. The authors conclude that a health hazard due to overexposure to trichloroethylene exists at the facility. Recommendations include establishing a respirator program in accordance with OSHA requirements, conducting periodic monitoring for trichloroethylene, and conducting annual audiometric examinations on all employees exposed to noise levels greater than 85dBA.
