Description:Area and breathing zone samples were analyzed for glutaraldehyde (111308) at National Jewish Hospital (SIC-8221, SIC-8062), Denver, Colorado in October, 1983. The survey was requested by a hospital representative to determine if a health hazard from glutaraldehyde existed at the facility. Medical questionnaires were administered to 11 workers. The ventilation system was inspected. Glutaraldehyde concentrations in the area and breathing zone samples ranged from not detectable to 1.5 milligram per cubic meter (mg/m3). Seventy five percent of the breathing zone and 46 percent of the area samples exceeded the American Conference of Government Industrial Hygienists standard of 0.7mg/m3. Nine workers reported irritative symptoms indicative of glutaraldehyde exposure. Eye and nose irritation, and throat and lung irritation were the most frequently reported symptoms. Ventilation in two of three areas where glutaraldehyde was used was not sufficient to remove glutaraldehyde vapors. The author concludes that a health hazard from glutaraldehyde exists at the facility. Recommendations include installing local exhaust ventilation in areas where glutaraldehyde is used, using personal protective clothing, and substituting less hazardous materials for glutaraldehyde if possible.
