Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for formaldehyde (50000), phenol (108952), hexamethylene-tetramine (100970), polynuclear aromatic compounds (PNA), and nitrosamines at Globe Industry (SIC-3079), Lowell, Indiana in February and June 1983. The evaluation was requested by the Indiana State Division of Labor to investigate a possible association between three cases of Hodgkins disease and employment at Globe Industry. Personnel records and work histories of the Hodgkins disease cases were reviewed. Several senior employees were interviewed to determine if there were additional Hodgkins disease cases. Phenol and formaldehyde concentrations of 2 and 0.15 milligrams per cubic meter, respectively, were measured. These concentrations were below the relevant standards. PNA and nitrosamines were not detected. Hexamethylene-tetramine was detected but could not be quantitated due to analytical problems. The three Hodgkins Disease cases may have been exposed to phenol, formaldehyde, and asphalt fumes at the facility. No additional cases of Hodgkins disease were identified. The authors conclude that there is no health hazard at Globe Industry. A causal relationship between the Hodgkins Disease cases and employment at Globe Industry cannot be established.
