  Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for organic solvents in the paint department of Ackerley Communications, Incorporated (SIC-7312), Stoneham, Massachusetts in March, 1983. The survey was requested by company management and the union to evaluate employee exposure to paint solvents and carbon-monoxide (630080) from motor vehicles garaged in the paint department. Employees had complained of lightheadedness and headaches. Organic solvent concentrations, reported as naphtha (8030306), ranged from 46 to 77 parts per million (ppm). The NIOSH standard for naphtha is 200ppm. One of the samples was analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry to identify its components. The solvent mixture resembled mineral spirits. Sampling for carbon-monoxide was not conducted as prior to the survey the practice of garaging vehicles in the paint department was stopped. The author concludes that a health hazard due to exposure to mineral spirits in the paint department does not exist. He suggests that employees avoid such practices as leaving open cans in the work area, not turning on exhaust fans, and carelessly disposing of painting materials.
