Description:A health hazard evaluation at Delco Electronics Division of General Motors Corporation (SIC-3662), Milwaukee, Wisconsin was conducted in November, 1980. The evaluation was requested confidentially to investigate a possible excess of deaths from brain cancer among former employees. A proportionate mortality ratio (PMR), a proportionate cancer mortality ratio (PCMR), and a case control study were conducted using information obtained from the company death benefits program. A total of 508 employee deaths occurred during the period 1950 to 1980. The PMRs for total cancer and brain cancer for hourly employees were 124 and 305, respectively. The corresponding PMRs for salaried employees were 139 and 296, respectively. The PCMR for brain cancer was significantly increased, 11 observed versus 5.6 deaths expected. A significant increase in stomach cancer mortality occurred among white female employees, 4 deaths versus 1.03 expected. In the case control study, elevated risks were found among machine, maintenance, and general office workers. No specific etiologic agent could be identified. The authors conclude that there is not enough evidence to determine if a health hazard exists at the facility. They recommend notifying NIOSH if additional cases of brain cancer occur at the facility.
