Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for carbon- monoxide (630080) at Aspen Ice Garden (SIC-7999), Aspen, Colorado in June, 1984. The survey was requested by the Pitkin County Health Department to evaluate carbon-monoxide exposures produced by gasoline powered ice resurfacing machines. Eight employees were monitored for exhaled carbon-monoxide. Maximum carbon-monoxide concentrations at the edge of the rink were 55 to 65 parts per million (ppm) when a new ice resurfacer was operated and 90ppm when an older resurfacer was used. The new and old resurfacers produced average concentrations of 140 to 175 and 200ppm, respectively. The OSHA standard for carbon-monoxide is 50ppm. Carbon-monoxide concentrations in a downstairs and upstairs office averaged 12ppm and 10 to 13ppm, respectively. Carbon-monoxide concentrations in the downstairs office decreased when an outside door was opened. Average individual concentrations of exhaled carbon-monoxide increased from 12.1 to 26.3ppm by the end of the day. The authors note that the offices get almost no fresh air unless an outside door is open. They conclude that a potential hazard due to carbon- monoxide exists at the facility. Recommendations include properly maintaining the resurfacing machines and improving ventilation in the offices and rink by forcing in fresh air.
