Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for ammonia (7664417), hydrogen-chloride (7647010), hydrogen-cyanide (74908), nitric-oxide (10102439), nitrogen-dioxide (10102440), and pyridine (110861) at Packard Electric (SIC-3699), Warren, Ohio in July, 1984. The evaluation was requested by the union local because of reports of nausea, eye irritation, and fatigue occurring among the employees. Symptom questionnaires were administered to 31 workers involved in the nylon injection molding operation. All sampled substances were below the limits of detection. The most frequently reported symptoms ranked in decreasing order of prevalence were sinus congestion, throat irritation, nasal irritation, headache, eye irritation, cough, and nausea. The symptoms could not be related to work in the molding process or to any specific compound. The authors conclude that a health hazard likely to result in any long term or chronic health effects does not exist at the facility. Recommendations include reversing the flow of the existing supply/exhaust ceiling fans in the injection molding area, better positioning of floor fans, and possible local exhausting of the nylon molding operations.
