Description:Personal air samples were analyzed for naphthalene (91203) at Butte Sheltered Workshops, Incorporated (SIC-3131), Butte, Montana in March, 1984. The survey was requested by the management of the workshop to evaluate exposure among employees working with felt pretreated with naphthalene. Work practices were observed. The ambient air concentrations of napthalene were less than 0.01 milligram per cubic meter (mg/m3). The OSHA standard for naphthalene is 50mg/m3. The workshop had natural ventilation, but no forced ventilation. Splash proof safety goggles and eye wash station were provided at the packaging work station. Workers did not wash their hands prior to eating or smoking during breaks. None of the workers had active hand or eye irritations. The author concludes that there is no health hazard from naphthalene at the facility. She recommends the practice of requiring packers to wear splash proof safety goggles. Workers should be provided with and required to wear impervious gloves during packaging. Employees who handle naphthalene or materials containing naphthalene should wash their hands before eating, smoking, or using toilet facilities. General mechanical ventilation should be added to the facility.
