Description:Area air samples were analyzed for pentane (109660), styrene (100425), xylene (1330207), toluene (108883), and benzene (71432) at DeLore International, Cincinnati, Ohio in September, 1983. The evaluation was requested by the manager because of odors infiltrating the facility from an adjacent polystyrene foam production facility and employee complaints of irritative symptoms. A medical questionnaire was administered to all 23 employees. Pentane concentrations averaged 15 parts per million (ppm). Benzene concentrations were below 0.1ppm. Styrene, xylene, and toluene concentrations were generally below 1ppm. These concentrations were well below OSHA standards. Dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, and eye and nose irritation were the most frequently reported symptoms. A follow up survey, conducted in December after unspecified control measures had been instituted, found that average pentane concentrations had been reduced to 2.4ppm. Benzene concentrations averaged 0.003ppm. The other substances could not be detected. The prevalence of symptoms was significantly reduced. The authors conclude that the irritative symptoms were associated with exposure to pentane and other vapors, and were alleviated by control measures. No long term effects from these exposures are likely. They recommend continuing efforts to isolate the facility from the polystyrene unit by sealing gaps in walls and ceilings.
