Description:Personal samples were analyzed for methyl-methacrylate (80626), isoflurane (26675467), and nitrous-oxide (10024972) at Swedish Hospital (SIC-8062), Seattle, Washington in May to July, 1983. The evaluation was requested by the management to determine if exposure of the surgical nurses to the substances was the cause of repeated headaches. Medical questionnaires were administered. Nurses kept daily logs for 2 months of their methyl-methacrylate exposures and their symptoms. During one surgical procedure operating room personnel were exposed to nitrous-oxide and isoflurane concentrations in excess of the NIOSH recommended standards of 25 and 2 parts per million, respectively, due to an exhaust hose not being connected before surgery. Otherwise, these gases and methyl- methacrylate concentrations were below the relevant standards. Sixty six percent of 59 nurses reported having at least one of such symptoms as headache, lightheadedness, eye irritation, and sore throat. No definite association between methyl-methacrylate exposure and headache could be established. The authors conclude that operating room personnel are overexposed to nitrous-oxide and isoflurane during surgical procedures. The findings suggest that some individuals may be more sensitive to methyl-methacrylate than others. They recommend that workers with a high sensitivity to methyl-methacrylate not be scheduled for procedures where methyl- methacrylate is to be used.
